As the title suggests, is there a way for registered participants to cancel their registration on their own? Without having to inform the organiser. My aim is to provide registered participants with a cancellation button or link, and gravity forms will automatically remove or trash entry.

Have you looked at using Gravity Flow’s approval step type with their one-click approval and rejection links in the step notification? If you define the event date as a field in the form, that could be used to ensure they can’t cancel within X days before the event (by expiring the approval step conditional upon that date). Depending on if payments are involved (?), I would think the Gravity Flow Stripe extension for the Gravity Forms add-on would be an easy way to offer a refund as well.
