I’m administering a Wordpress website that uses a very old theme (builder) and currently uses Gravity forms version 1.9.14. I want to update the old, old Gravity forms to a new paid version, but do not want to risk disrupting an old theme. Is anyone aware of any problems in doing so? Thank You
Updating Gravity Forms from 1.9.14 to the latest version is a big jump, so there are definitely some things to watch out for—especially with an old theme. Here’s what I’d recommend:
- Backup Everything – Before updating, take a full site backup (files + database). If anything breaks, you can roll back.
- Test in a Staging Site – If possible, set up a staging site to test the update without affecting your live site.
- Check Theme & Plugin Compatibility – Older themes and plugins might not play well with newer Gravity Forms versions. After updating, test forms thoroughly to ensure they still work as expected.
- Update Gradually – If your WordPress version is outdated, update WordPress first, then Gravity Forms. Jumping too many versions at once can cause issues.
If you run into problems, enabling debug mode might help identify conflicts. Hope that helps—good luck with the update!
Thank you for the reply. Yes, I’ve done backups and I’ve put our site into maintenance mode so I can work on it without bother. I’ve used all new plug-ins up to date and WordPress is also at its latest version. My theory is to try Gravity Forms 14 day trial and if I can integrate the new version of Gravity, I would be happy to purchase a new license. Thanks for the advice and the good luck.
Dave
When updating from a version that old, there is one version (somewhere around 2.3, I think) through which you’ll want to update first. This will ensure certain database upgrade routines are run properly. Reach out to support and we can get you that specific version along with more comprehensive instructions on how to carry that out.
And, yes, backup/staging/compatibility, as mentioned by @kausar.alm, are all things you’ll want to have in mind.
Thank you, Joshua. I plan on contacting Gravity tomorrow to inquire as to how to go about this, and if the 14 day trial will allow me to test my site. I am currently getting critical errors with Gravity because the files are so old. If all goes successfully, my plan is to purchase a new license for the website. Is there anyone in particular, at Gravity, I would need to speak with?
Thank You,
Dave
You can reach out to technical support from within your account. That’ll put your ticket into the queue for our team. Any one of us can then pick that up and walk you through what will be needed.
Excellent, I’ll be calling Tuesday morning.
Thank You,
David Hobson
