Gravity forms keeps upload copies

We are overhauling our large site and doing some keen consolidations and clean-ups. I observed that my wp-content/uploads/gravity_forms/ folder is +2GB in size, it looks like it stores uploads into itself but shouldn’t the uploads just go into /uploads once uploaded via form ?
Or is Gravity forms keeping redundant copy of each upload… can I clean this folder, is it safe and sure no posts will get images missing ?

For example I see
./wp-content/uploads/2019/01/a350feba1bdb7ce48deef74b525df463.gif: 23M
&
./wp-content/uploads/gravity_forms/6-dc94b70c8b766a38f59a0d587b1a0c39/01/2019/a350feba1bdb7ce48deef74b525df463.gif: 23M

Both are identical files… but I’m not sure why we have a copy of it held in /uploads/gravity_forms/xxx

Kindly explain and also let me know an efficient way to clean /uploads/gravity_forms/ and also how to keep it clean and tidy in future.
