How to split down text entered in a postcode entry

Hi All, in gravity forms is there a way to have a single line field which shows the first part of a postcode entry (Before the space).

Currently I use a single line field with custom input mask set at **** but it ignores the space. the ideal solution is for it to show just the first part of a postcode for example E1 2JJ is E1 or SS14 4DD is SS14
